CTM and Supratours coaches: the cheapest way to reach the south and Chefchaouen
Where trains do not go, CTM and Supratours connect the big cities with Essaouira, Agadir, Chefchaouen, Ouarzazate and Merzouga, with comfortable coaches and tickets you can book online.
- Cost:
- usually a few dozen to ≈ 250 MAD depending on the route
- You save:
- several hundred MAD versus a private driver
Two reliable companies
CTM is the main national coach company, with a very wide network. Supratours, a subsidiary of ONCF, extends train lines to towns without a station: for example Marrakech – Essaouira or Marrakech – Agadir, sometimes with a combined train + coach ticket.
Both run air-conditioned coaches on fixed timetables from their own terminals, often separate from the main bus station. Double-check the departure address.
Booking and travelling
Tickets can be booked on both companies' official websites and apps, or at the counter. Book at least the day before in high season and during Moroccan school holidays: routes to Chefchaouen, Essaouira and Merzouga fill up fast.
Arrive 30 minutes before departure. Hold luggage is checked in for a small fee with a tag: keep it, you need it to collect your bag. On long journeys (Merzouga is a full overnight ride from Fes or Marrakech), bring water, a sweater for the air conditioning and a few snacks.
Coach or grand taxi?
Shared grand taxis leave when full (six passengers) and are handy for short hops between nearby towns. For long distances, the coach is more comfortable, safer and often cheaper. If you are a group making many stops, a private driver can make sense, but for a simple city-to-city link, CTM and Supratours are hard to beat.
In practice
- Book on the official CTM and Supratours websites or apps.
- Check the departure terminal address, which differs by company.
- Arrive 30 min early, keep your luggage tag.
- High season and holidays: book the day before at least.
