Riads: when and how to pay less for a night in the medina
Riad prices vary a lot with the season and length of stay. Travelling outside peak periods, staying several nights and contacting the riad can bring the bill down noticeably.

Periods to avoid, and to aim for
Prices peak during the spring holidays, long May weekends, the end-of-year festive season and major events. In Marrakech, July and August are very hot and often cheaper, as are January and February outside European school holidays.
In Fes, winter is cool and rainy but quiet and good value. In Essaouira, summer is high season: aim for spring or autumn instead.
Compare first, then ask
Compare riads on booking platforms to spot well-rated places and their rates. Then contact the riad: for a stay of three nights or more, many offer a sliding rate, a free transfer or breakfast included. Read cancellation terms carefully and check whether the tourist tax is included.
A riad slightly further from the main square, but close to a medina gate reachable by taxi, is often cheaper and more practical with luggage.
What makes the difference on site
Check for air conditioning in summer and heating in winter: riads stay cool in summer but can be cold and damp in January. A rooftop terrace changes the experience. Finally, a good riad is a gold mine of advice: ask the staff where to eat, which guide to hire and how to avoid traps. It is often the most reliable source of good tips.
In practice
- Avoid spring holidays, long weekends and the festive season.
- From 3 nights, ask for a lower rate or a free transfer.
- Check cancellation, tourist tax, A/C and heating.
- A riad near a medina gate is easier with luggage.
