Fes: why an official guide saves you time (and money)
The Fes el-Bali medina has thousands of alleys and GPS is unreliable there. Half a day with an official guide avoids fake guides, detours and forced shop stops.
- Cost:
- a few hundred MAD for half a day, shared
- You save:
- time, and fake guides' commissions
The fake guide problem
At Bab Bou Jeloud and on the main streets, young men offer to guide you or claim you are going the wrong way. Their income comes mainly from commissions on what you buy in the shops they take you to, which explains the detours.
An official guide is trained, carries a professional card and knows the history of the medersas, fondouks and craft quarters. Their presence alone also discourages approaches.
How to book well
Ask your riad: most work with trusted official guides. You can also go through the local tourism office. Before setting off, agree clearly on three points: duration (half a day is enough for a first visit), the total price for the group, and that you do not want shop stops unless you ask.
In a group, the cost per person becomes very reasonable. A tip at the end is appreciated if you were happy.
Exploring alone afterwards
After a guided half day, you will have your bearings: the two main streets (Talaa Kebira and Talaa Seghira), Bab Bou Jeloud and Seffarine square. Then explore alone with an offline map. When you get lost, follow the flow of people heading down towards the heart of the medina, or walk back up towards a gate, then rejoin a main street.
In practice
- Book through your riad or the tourism office.
- Check the guide's professional card.
- Agree duration, total price and "no shops" before leaving.
- Half a day is enough for a first visit.
