Marrakech airport: reach the medina by bus for 30 MAD
Bus line 19 links Marrakech-Menara airport to Jemaa el-Fna. It costs far less than a taxi taken without negotiating, and it is easy if you travel light.
- Cost:
- ≈ 30 MAD per person
- You save:
- up to 150 MAD versus an unnegotiated taxi
How it works
Bus 19 leaves right in front of the terminal, on the left as you exit arrivals. It runs roughly every 20–30 minutes during the day and reaches Jemaa el-Fna in 30–45 minutes depending on traffic, with a few stops in town (Gueliz, Avenue Mohammed V).
Buy the ticket from the driver or conductor. The ticket is usually also valid for the return trip to the airport if used within a limited time: ask when you buy it and keep it.
What about taxis?
If you arrive late, in a group or with a lot of luggage, a taxi is still convenient. At arrivals, the prices quoted are often well above the usual fare. Agree on the price before loading your bags, or ask the driver to use the meter. Easiest of all: ask your riad to arrange the transfer. The price is set in advance and someone meets you, which matters because cars cannot enter the medina.
Our advice
Withdraw a little cash at the airport ATM so you have change, as drivers rarely have enough for a large note. If your riad is deep in the medina, get off at Jemaa el-Fna and ask the riad to collect you on the square: finding your way through the alleys at night with a suitcase is not easy.
In practice
- Stop: in front of the terminal, arrivals side.
- Frequency: about every 20–30 min during the day.
- Journey: 30–45 min to Jemaa el-Fna.
- Taxi: agree the price before getting in, or ask for the meter.
