Is Morocco safe?

What to know for a worry-free trip: real risks, common scams, useful numbers.

In general

Morocco is a heavily visited and generally safe destination. The main annoyances are petty theft and pushy vendors or unofficial guides.

Common scams

The 'road is closed' detour to a shop, the taxi without a meter, the fake guide. A polite, firm refusal almost always works.

Women travelling solo

Street comments can happen. Clothes covering shoulders and knees, a confident attitude and well-reviewed accommodation help a lot.

Emergency numbers

Police: 19. Fire and ambulance: 15. Gendarmerie (outside cities): 177. Also check your own government's travel advice before leaving.
