Mediterranean or Atlantic, surf or family swimming: choosing the right coast

Morocco has around 3,500 kilometres of coastline on two very different seas. The Mediterranean, in the north, is calmer and warmer in summer, ideal for families. The Atlantic, to the west and south, is cooler and rougher, but has the best waves and beaches that are pleasant all year in the south.
Mediterranean: summer with the family
Saïdia, Al Hoceima and the Tetouan coast are mainly June-to-September destinations. The sea is usually calm and the atmosphere very family-oriented; book early for July and August.
Atlantic: winter sun and waves
Agadir and Taghazout stay pleasant in winter. Essaouira is windy, perfect for kitesurfing. Dakhla combines a lagoon, desert and steady wind for much of the year.
Safety
On the Atlantic, currents can be strong: swim on lifeguarded beaches and near lifeguard posts.
