Kitesurfers on an Atlantic beach

Dakhla

A lagoon between desert and ocean, a leading kitesurf destination

Dakhla sits on a peninsula of about forty kilometres that encloses a vast lagoon on the Atlantic. Flat water, steady wind for much of the year and long beaches make it one of the best-known kitesurf destinations in the world. Beyond watersports, the landscapes draw visitors: the White Dune on the edge of the lagoon, Dragon Island at low tide, the Asma hot springs and oysters farmed in the bay. Most travellers arrive by plane, as the city is very far from other destinations by road.

Getting around

Dakhla airport has flights from Casablanca and some connections from Europe. By road, the city is several days from Agadir: driving only makes sense as part of a long road trip. Locally, most lodges arrange transfers.

Tips

  • Before travelling, check your own government's travel advice for the region.
  • Book accommodation and lessons together: the lagoon camps are far from town.
  • Protect yourself from sun and wind: the cool feel is deceptive.
